Biography of Alonzo Powell
Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1983, Powell went on to play minor league baseball in Great Falls (1983), Everett and Clinton (1984), San Jose (1985), and West Palm Beach and Jacksonville (1986) before making the jump from Double A to the big leagues. Powell's major league debut came on April 6, 1987 with the Montreal Expos against the Cincinnati Reds at MLB's traditional opening day game at Riverfront Stadium. His first major league hit came in his second at bat, a double off of Tom Browning. The remainder of the 1987 season was then divided between Montreal and Indianapolis of the International League. Three and a half successful seasons in the minors followed at Indianapolis (1988), West Palm Beach and Indianapolis (1989), Portland (1990), and Calgary (1991). 1991 was a banner year for Powell, batting .375 at Calgary, and then getting called up to play 57 games with the Seattle Mariners as an outfielder, first baseman, and designated hitter. In May of 1992 Powell signed with the Chunichi Dragons of Nagoya, Japan. The next seven seasons were met with the excitement of playing professional baseball in Japan. Powell says: "It was a wonderful opportunity to go to a different country and adjust to a different style of play." 1992 to 1998 packed a powerful punch to an already impressive resume. Powell was named as an all star five times. He was awarded two gold gloves for his stellar outffield play, and he also won three consecutive batting titles (.324 in 1994, .355 in 1995, and .340 in 1996), a feat unmatched by any American player. Powell came back to the United States and found more success playing Triple A ball for the New York Yankees' affiliate (Columbus Clippers) in 1999 & 2000 and the Colorado Rockies' affiliate (Colorado Springs Sky Sox) in 2000. Finally, in 2001, a brilliant playing career concluded with the Newark Bears of the Independent League. The highlight of that final campaign occurred when Powell hit for the cycle on September 4, 2001. At the age of 36 Powell decided it was time to begin a coaching career. In 2002 and 2003 he served as hitting coach for the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League. In 2004 he took over the reins as manager of the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League, and will hold that same post again in 2005. As the proud father of three children, Powell finds himself at a busy time for a parent - with one child in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary school. Cameron is 16, a sophomore; Brooklyn is 12, a sixth grader; and Dalton is 6, a first grader. On a final note, there is something magical about this baseball man named Alonzo Powell. He was a player for the Chunichi Dragons, he is the manager of the Dayton Dragons, and, oh yes, he was born in 1964 ... the Year of the Dragon! |
